day's heat

The day’s heat
enfolds me,

green and gold-
en lightly-slipping

rays pour through thin
separations

in my rough-hewn
fence,

and make crosses
bright in
the grass;

but the fog broods,
rising white
as death.

tonight
will be

cold.
